Shooting in the dark!

Posted by James Snee on Monday, April 4, 2011,

As it is very obvious from my long period of bloglessness, I have been very busy.

Now, part of this is real life rudely intruding into my creativity; we are in the middle of recession that is putting huge strained on the humble wage slave and there is no likelihood of things letting up in the near future.

However, I don’t make life easy for myself by taking on too much. Sinc...

Writing Classes?

Posted by James Snee on Thursday, January 13, 2011,

Has it really been so long since I last posted?

Well it was Christmas and New Year. Over the New Year I met a couple of new contributors to the Asylum series. It was nice to put faces to names and discuss steampunk stories.

It was also nice to have people say that they had enjoyed the book and had found it difficult to put down. On the basis that No-one will ever get rich from...

Of Wesley and Mary Sue…

Posted by James Snee on Monday, December 20, 2010,

With Rain, Steam and Speed becoming a series and the title characters now recurring in several stories I have to consider the quality of my character writing and start planning ahead to avoid some of the popular pitfalls of speculative fiction.

The first is the Wesley; named after the much hated Star trek TNG character. The difficulty for the writer is that he or she will not actua...

Old Projects, New Beginnings…

Posted by James Snee on Thursday, December 16, 2010,

Today I have finally had the inspiration I needed for the next episode of Rain, Steam and Speed. It was while I was out of the office for a walk at lunch time.

I often find walks a good way to think something through. After recording the first episode last week, I got the plot synopsis for the series out and tried to write a plan for episode 2.

Nothing happened.

I got as far as:...

Having fun on a steep learning curve.

Posted by James Snee on Monday, December 13, 2010,

Last Wednesday I managed to get half a dozen actors into a recording studio for free. I can not thank them enough for their time and effort. As a result the pilot for my steampunk radio series, “Rain, Steam and Speed” has now been recorded and is undergoing editing and the addition of background noise, incidental music and sound effects.

We started off, after we had...

My many other projects...

Posted by James Snee on Wednesday, December 8, 2010,

Today other projects are moving a small step closer to fruition.

This evening is my first attempt at recording a radio play. The play is, naturally, steampunk themed and ties into stories I have already published. It is called Rain, Steam and Speed, after a famous 19th century painting and the names of the main characters. The three characters are Miss Rain, Professor Steam and In...

Words in my head...

Posted by James Snee on Thursday, December 2, 2010,

Sometimes I try to use writing as a release. The trouble is, when I have a crazy week (like this week) the ideas become bottled up inside and add to my stress rather than releasing it.

Let me explain. I have always told myself stories. I have invented characters and I suspect that amateur physiologists out there will be thinking that these are the people I would like to be etc an...

In the beginning...

Posted by James Snee on Monday, November 29, 2010,

Well, not quite. The last line has several beginnings each belonging to a separate contributor.

Perhaps I should say the beginning of my blog as a struggling writer and publisher.

I use the word struggling quite deliberately. Reading and writing don’t come easily to me. They are difficult, frustrating and tiring. So why do I put myself through the stress of writing, putting my...
